CANANGA ODORATA VAR. GENUINA YLANG YLANG C.odorata var. genuina is a tall tropical tree that produces numerous yellow- green, highly scented flowers. The name 'ylang ylang' means 'flower of flowers', although the words are derived from a Philippine phrase that describes how the flowers flutter in the breeze. The intense floral, sensual fragrance of the flowers was used to perfume the bedlinen of newly married couples in traditional Indonesian culture. Ylang ylang has long been considered an aphrodisiac - its scent is considered to be very relaxing yet highly euphoric. The fresh flowers also have value, and are sold for personal and domestic adornment and to scent
fabrics (Weiss 1997).

DISTRIBUTION Native to tropical Asia, especially Indonesia and the Philippines. Major oil producers are Madagascar, Reunion and the Comoro Islands.
OTHER SPECIES Very closely related to cananga (C. odoratum var. macrophylla), although the oil produced from the ylang ylang is considered of superior quality for perfumery work.

CHARACTERISTICS Ylang ylang extra is a pale yellow, oily liquid with an intensely sweet, soft, floral-balsamic, slightly spicy scent - a good oil has a creamy rich topnote. A very intriguing perfume oil in its own right, it also blends well with rosewood, jasmine, vetiver, opopanax, bergamot, mimosa, cassie, Peru balsam, rose, tuberose, costus and others. It is an excellent fixative.
