Orris Root Absolute Oil (Iris pallida / Iris germanica)
Short Description
One of the most precious materials in perfumery, Orris Root Absolute delivers a soft, powdery, violet-like elegance with exceptional depth and fixative power.
Full Description
Natroil’s Orris Root Absolute Oil is a rare and highly prized perfumery material derived from the aged rhizomes of iris species such as Iris pallida and Iris germanica. Unlike most botanicals, the freshly harvested root is almost odourless and must undergo a lengthy maturation process—often three to five years—before its characteristic fragrance fully develops.
This extended ageing allows the formation of irones, the aromatic compounds responsible for Orris’ distinctive scent—an elegant fusion of powdery violet, soft florals, and subtle woody undertones.
The result is a material of remarkable sophistication: delicate yet tenacious, refined yet deeply complex. Orris Absolute is widely regarded as one of the most luxurious ingredients in perfumery, valued not only for its scent but for its ability to transform and elevate an entire composition.
Functionally, Orris Root Absolute acts as both a heart-to-base note and a natural fixative, enhancing longevity, smoothing transitions between notes, and imparting a velvety, powdery finish. Its presence can add a sense of refinement and cohesion that is otherwise difficult to achieve.
Used sparingly due to its potency and cost, even trace amounts can introduce a silky, cosmetic-like elegance reminiscent of classic fine fragrances.
