There is only one genus relevant to perfumery or aromatherapy – the genus
Dianthus. Dianthus caryophylius is the carnation, and D. plumarius is known as the pink Carnation. Carnation absolute has been used in aromatherapy, and is of importance in perfumery.
It has a very powerful fragrance and is extremely costly to produce.
The absolute is a green or brown, highly viscous liquid or paste, with sweet, herbaceous, honey-like, minty floral and spicy notes.
Carnation absolute is a highly concentrated essential oil that is extracted from the flowers of the carnation plant (Dianthus caryophyllus). The oil has a sweet, floral, and spicy aroma, and is commonly used in perfumes, soaps, and other cosmetic products.
